Fast growing social games

What types of social games are hot right now? When you hear a word "social games", I am pretty sure you think of a game like "farmville" made by Zynga. However, social games that are growing fast right now are a lot different from what social games that you would think of. They are so called "Social Games On Smartphones"!

Recently, social games on smartphones are developed and serviced in several different countries and main source of those games are located in Japan. Companies such as GREE, Mobage, or DeNA grew so fast since smartphones came out. These companies are dedicated to design social games on smartphones and webs. Their games are basically very similar to one another but designed to have different interface and graphics. They usually collaborate with the entertainment source such as comics, console games, sports, etc. Their strategies to sell their games are interesting. The social games are free to play but when you actually play their games, you can pay to purchase in-game contents, which makes the players better off than the other players. The game is basically designed to compete with other players, so their market strategy is to sell in-game contents that will differentiate from other player. There are social game players who spend about $100-2000 per week or even per day for the type of social games. That is a lot for a person to spend on a game.

One thing about social game apps is that they are really easy to play. If you carry a smartphone,  you can play pretty much anywhere anytime. Social game apps on smartphones are slowly coming into the app markets and taking customers in. I thought this business model is pretty interesting, therefore I would write about it.

Thanks.

Big success in Social Gaming

Have you heard of social games? Social games usually refer to games that involve multiple players and those players interact with other players in forms of playing games together and socializing on those games. Social gaming started as fairly small scale but then, it started growing so fast and no one even noticed it coming!! How much did it grow over the years? Research shows that there are about 20 million active players on Xbox live. Comparably, there are over 350 million active players on social games!!

Why are they growing so fast? The key to answer this question relies on how easily players can access the social games. There are so many ways to access internet for everyone now days. Anyone can access internet from home, school, library and even mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. This means that social gaming players have access to the games that they play pretty much anywhere. The ease of accessing game keeps people to play these social games and even brings more people into the field of gaming.

How much do they make on social games? One of the leading companies in social gaming is Zynga. (Zynga's most popular social game is called "Farmville") Zynga has over 270 million active players and based on the research, there are 52 % of social game players spend $0-5 for in-game purchases. That means that Zynga earns revenue of approximately $351,000,000+ per in-game content. That is huge because whenever new in-game content comes out, 52 % of active players are going to purchase that content! Social gaming is growing each day and if you are thinking of starting a business related to games, I think social gaming is where the business is at!

When you think about social games, you probably think of the web games with Facebook like "Farmville." However, there are other forms of social games and I would like to talk about those types of games in the next post.

Here is great slides about social gaming / online gaming:
